DSL's FOUNDATIONAL Course:
DSL EdgeWork — Experiential & Scientific Foundations of Yoga/Bodywork Principles & Therapeutics Anatomy • Kinesiology • Physiology • Structural/Postural Analysis
DSL EdgeWork ... Is An Integration of Physical/Mental/Relational Yoga and Hands-On, Bio-Structural Bodywork, Based On a Wholistic Philosophy of Life and Natural Medicine
.
PREMISES of DSL Sciences:
In Science presentations, DSL doesn’t say “This is a bone, and this is a muscle.” ... This is too abstract, too far removed from reality, too boring for most people. Most people learn mundane data far better when they have a context they can relate to, providing an interesting, useful framework in which they can place the otherwise boring bits of data.
So we bring the abstract into the concrete: ... When a new Student or Client walks into your studio, how do you SEE and KNOW what’s happening in their unique bodymind? How do you KNOW the dynamics of particular asana or exercises and the affects on their body? How do you practice the 1st Law of Healing: Do No Harm by not causing injury? How do you then proceed to maximize their results, while facilitating preventive care?
One clue is that you must FEEL, as much as possible, what they are experiencing. The more you can recreate in your own body what is happening for them, ther more you'll know what EXACTLY is going on in his or her body.
We look at real life situations — such as a slouched posture or low back pain — and work backward from there, so you have Real World Contexts in which to understand the Sciences, a far more effective way to learn. Your understandings of bones, muscles, joints, fascia and nerves will emerge from the ground up as you learn to see and understand overall function and dysfunction.
Course Description:
Learn Yoga Sciences while experiencing the Principles of Maximizing Results and Minimizing Injuries in Physical/Mental Yoga. Learn the DSL Basics of How to Structurally Analyze and Posturally Evaluate your students and private Clients, seeing their unique structure, knowing what they should be doing and avoiding, and understanding how yoga asana work in the healthy and not so healthy. ... How exercise (strength, endurance and cardiovascular training) fits into therapeutic situations. ... Learn to use hands-on work to assist psycho/neuro/muscular and myofascial release in asana.
This Is Done In the Context of Learning:
1.) All About Muscle Tension — Its Causes, Effects & Principles of Reversal
2.) Physiological Differences, and Functional Interactions between, nerve, muscle, tendon, ligament, fascia, periosteum, bone & joints.
3.) DSL's FUNdamentals of Yoga & Exercise Principles — De-Constructing Yoga from the Inside Out — The Elements of How the BodyMind functions and what makes an Asana work.
4.) DSL's CORE/Structural Yoga — Where Effortless Great Posture & Fluid, Energetic Movement actually come from, and how to restore or maximize it
5.) Applying DSL FUNdamentals & CORE Principles to a complete DSL Let-Go Yoga series and Classical Hatha Yoga
6.) Apply DSL to Body Mechanics, Movement Therapy & Tai Chi/Chi Kung Exercise
7.) Integrating DSL's Hands-On, Bio-Structural Bodywork Techniques with Therapeutic Asana
8.) Basic Internal & External Ergonomics — Arranging a work or living space for best maintenace of great posture and fluid movement. — Then discovering how to use Yoga to accommodate your ergonomic set-up.
OPTIONAL Weekend: 9.) Basics of DSL's Hands-On, Structurally Oriented Bodywork
Course Outline:
Bearing in mind that the DSL approach requires HUNDREDS of hours to get really competent at, this program will start you on the path of knwoing what most people do not about working with and healing your clients and students.
Here is What You'll Learn:
• The Foundational Course will focus on the Core Postural muscles that afffect the widest range of needs and conditions of the most people
• Advanced Structural Anatomy — Muscles, Bones, Fascia & Joints; the Components of Posture & Movement; where they are and how they work — in the Context of Real Life situations
• Structural Analysis — Physics & Geometry, especially the influence of gravity and internal water pressure in posture, movement and asana — Stability via Fluidity, NOT Rigidity
• Functional & Postural Kinesiology — Influence of each muscle on bones and overall structure, posture and movement — Their interplay with each other and with gravity and water-pressure — and the Functions of fascia
• Neuromuscular & Myofascial Physiology — Mechanisms, especially nerves, that make the structural components work together, or not
• Autonomic Physiology — Sympathetic & Parasympathetic control of volitional and healing/immune function
• PsychoMuscular Integration & Release Techniques — The Neurophysiology of Consciousness and the interactive control systems of the BodyMind — How the Mind, the Brain, the Nerves and the Muscles converge and interact and create the Vehicle of Self-Expression
• Musculoskeletal/Neuromuscular/Myofascial Pathology — What makes it all NOT work. Understanding the little known but wide range of conditions and symptoms that arise primarily from Chronic, Excess Muscle Tension
• More on the Mind and Emotions and their interactionwith and influence on all of the above
The Sciences will be studied in the context of DSL's Principles of Posture, Movement & Therapeutics in Yoga & BodyWork, including, but not limited to:
• Why NO Pain Means MORE Gain
• How Yoga tends to Compress the Joints (but doesn't have to)
• Muscle Contraction — The Short & the Long of It
• Nature of Relaxation/De-Contraction of Muscles
• Working WITH, not against, the Breath
• Why Muscles are BOTH Yin AND Yang, not just Yang
• Why Fascia is BOTH Yin AND Yang, not just Yin
• Where Great Posture & Fluid Movement Really Come From
• TIME and its Impact on Yoga & BodyWork practices
• What Yoga can do that Bodywork cannot, and vice versa
• How they compliment each other, including ...
• Using light to moderate DSL Edge-Touch in correcting and/or assisting student's yoga postures
• We'll also look at many Myth-Conceptions in Yoga & BodyWork such as:
• Why Fascia/Connective Tissue are NOT a primary source of postural distortion, and what IS
• How many yoga teachings are (inadvertantly) actually making people ... and themselves ... WORSE
• How Thinking and Feeling are NOT, at their roots, truly different things, and are NOT necessarily incompatible with each other
Course Instructor: David Scott Lynn (DSL)
A Yoga teacher since 1976, and a Structural Bodyworker since 1981, David has done extensive, ground-breaking research and development in the Therapeutic Applications of Yoga & Bodywork as an integrated system. His hands-on Private Practice specializes in, and has a 70 to 80 per cent success rate with, those who had been given up on by both orthodox AND alternative practitioners. Nearly all of his principles are based on well-accepted, orthodox, published scientific research. — In all four corners of America, and many places in between, people say no one does what DSL does, and it is amazingly effective. ... And, it makes total sense.
