What's Different About DSL EdgeWork?
There are a number of differences between DSL's approach to working with Chronic, Excess Muscle Tension via Yoga, BodyWork and related techniques.
Here is a Brief List:
• NO Pain means MORE Gain (less manual pressure, or less deep into a stretch, provides greater relaxation). Playing over The EDGE of Pain, Fear & Resistance increases stress, tension & resistance in the BodyMind, and should be avoided at all costs!!!
• NO Pain or Fear means greater and Deeper Integration of neuromuscular and myofascial relaxation. Changes work higher up into your central nervous system and deeper into the brain.
• Learning to make important Distinctions between Pain and varying levels of Intensity of Sensation. Some intense sensations are more intense than are many pains.
• Further distinction of The No Pain EDGE into Minimum, Moderate and Maximum Edges. Some systems bring you right up to the limits of pain, or a little less, or a little (sometimes a LOT) over, but MANY things work better when you start out at very low levels of intensity — especially in therapeutic situations. The first hint of any sensation at all might be the first real Edge for your particular situation. This applies whether it is a stretch, an exercise, or manual pressure into a myofascial (muscle-fascia) unit.
• DSL’s verbal and other Communication Systems puts The Client or The Student in charge of how deep or fast the therapist, coach or teacher works, enhancing body/mind integration. ... Some health care practitioners have to learn to deal with their control or authority issues!
• DSL EdgeWork Therapeutics focuses on decreasing sympathetic stress functions (fight, flight, fright or freeze reactions) while activating your parasympathetic processes. These are the rest, relaxation, self-healing, regeneration and immune system functions. — In our high-stress culture, even fully healthy people need to spend as much time as possible activating their parasympathetic nerve functions!
• TIME is of the Essence — Longer time in a stretch, or more time with manual pressure on a muscle (but with lower intensity), allows deeper, more complete relaxation of long held tension, stress & habit patterns. — Teaches Patience, too!
• Ideally, physical Yoga and BodyWork are used as meditative processes, further enhancing the release of tension with deeper integration of bodymind functions.
• STRUCTURAL STRATEGIES — DSL utilizes unique and in some ways revolutionary ways of looking at structure and postural relationships. DSL's approach to finding the true source of problems that just won't go away, or keep coming back, is in understanding how the overall human structure relates in ways that few people have ever realized or even thought about.
• OPTIONAL: Longer BodyWork Sessions (usually 3 + hours), are optimal for those who have long standing or deeply held problems (as in a severe car or other kind of accident) and/or trauma. (In is private work, David seldom does anythign less than 3 hour sessions, often as long as 5 hours. He has worked with people 5 to 6 hours per day up to 10 days in a row. As long as the work is not too intense or too deep, most people have no problem with this, and in fact find it to be a life changing experience.
• More Time in sessions allows more complete balancing of the components of your structure and posture, bringing you to overall balance in a far shorter time.
• More Time allows greater precision in locating distant, deeper, hidden Trigger Points or Trapped Nerves (Neuro-Traps) that other methods often do not find.
• Chiropractors say their spinal & joint adjusting techniques are easier and last longer after a DSL trained therapist works with their patients!
